How to Create a WiFi QR Code
A WiFi QR code lets guests join your network by scanning instead of typing. It is one of the highest-value uses of a QR code for cafés, rentals and offices — and it takes about a minute to set up.
Find your exact network details
You need three things: the network name (SSID) exactly as broadcast, the encryption type, and the password. The SSID is case-sensitive — 'CafeGuest' and 'cafeguest' are different networks to a scanner.
Pick the right encryption type
- WPA/WPA2 — correct for essentially every modern router, including WPA3 networks in mixed mode
- WEP — only for legacy hardware you cannot replace
- None — open networks with no password
Use a guest network
Anyone who can see or photograph the printed code can read the password. Put visitors on a guest SSID that is isolated from your own devices, and rotate the password (and reprint the card) periodically.
Print and place the card
Print at least 3 cm wide for a table card and add a caption like 'Scan to join our WiFi'. Laminate cards that live on counters, and place them where people sit rather than at the entrance.
Test on both platforms
iPhone and Android both handle WiFi codes from the native camera, but behaviour differs slightly. Test both before you print a batch.
