How to Scan a QR Code
Almost every phone made in the last decade scans QR codes with the built-in camera — no app required. Here is how, on each platform, plus what to do when nothing happens.
On iPhone
Open the Camera app, point it at the code and hold steady. A notification banner appears at the top — tap it. If nothing happens, check Settings › Camera › Scan QR Codes is on, or use the Code Scanner in Control Centre.
On Android
Open the Camera app and point it at the code; most builds show a link chip to tap. On some devices the feature lives under Google Lens or a 'Scan QR code' tile in Quick Settings.
Scanning a code already on your screen
Save or screenshot the image, then open it in Google Photos (Lens) on Android or Photos on iPhone and tap the detected link. That is how you use a WiFi or ticket code someone sent you.
When a code will not scan
- Move closer or further away — most cameras need 15–60 cm for a small code
- Improve lighting and avoid glare on glossy surfaces
- Clean the lens and hold the phone parallel to the code
- If the code is damaged or printed too small, ask for a larger reprint
Scan safely
Check the preview URL before tapping. Be wary of stickers placed over existing codes in public places, and never enter payment details on a page you reached only through an unexpected code.
